The National Intellectual Property Rights and Commercialization Conference 2024 was successfully held on 9th November 2024 at the BCC Auditorium, ICT Tower. This significant event gathered distinguished leaders, academic scholars, and innovative thinkers to spotlight the pivotal role of intellectual property (IP) in academia and its contribution to fostering an innovation-driven economy. As part of the University Innovation Hub Program (UIHP), spearheaded by the Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority (BHTPA) and supported by the World Bank, the conference aimed to enhance the digital entrepreneurship ecosystem across Bangladeshi universities. Mr. Shish Haider Chowdhury ndc, Secretary, ICT Division attended as the Chief Guest. The event was chaired by Mr. A.K.M. Amirul Islam ndc, Managing Director, Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority (BHTPA)

Event Highlights:

  • Keynote Presentation: A powerful address by Prof. Dr. Samsilah Binti Roslan, Director of Putra Science Park, University of Putra Malaysia, on “Building an Innovation-Driven Economy: The Power of IP in Academia.” Her keynote underscored the crucial intersection of academic IP and economic growth, inspiring attendees with insights on leveraging intellectual property to drive sustainable development.

  • Patenting Insights: Mr. Md. Munim Hassan, Director General, Department of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks (DPDT) inspired the audience with his insightful remarks as the Special Guest.

  • Expert Panel Discussion: An engaging session titled “Patentability of Innovation: Bridging Local Context with Global Standards,” chaired by Mr. Md. Daud Miah (Additional Secretary, Registrar of Bangladesh Copyrights) and moderated by Dr. Ananya Raihan, Innovation and Startup Specialist at UIHP. Panelists included notable experts such as Mr. ANM Safiqul Islam, Dr. Khondaker Abdullah-Al-Mamun, and Barrister Tasnuva Shelly, who provided comprehensive perspectives on aligning local IP practices with international benchmarks.

  • Interactive Workshop: The workshop on “Creating University IP Ecosystems: Policies, Management, and Growth” was a focal point, facilitated by Dr. Tan Swee Leng, Director of the Technology Transfer Office, Multimedia University, Malaysia. This session empowered participants to understand and create frameworks essential for fostering robust IP ecosystems within academic institutions.

The conference was an integral component of the University Innovation Hub Program (UIHP) under the broader PRIDE Project, which aims to strengthen digital entrepreneurship and innovation in Bangladesh. By bridging the gap between academia and industry, the UIHP is establishing innovation hubs in selected universities, enriching the culture of research, IP protection, and entrepreneurship.

The National IP Conference 2024 successfully reinforced the importance of intellectual property in academia as a catalyst for an innovation-driven economy. The event provided participants with invaluable insights through expert discussions and hands-on workshops, empowering academic institutions to develop robust IP ecosystems.
